Is a green-cheeked conure a good family bird?
I currently have 4 healthy, little parakeets with crazy but fun personalities. I'm looking to get another pet bird to add to my family's wide menagerie of pets. (Don't worry, we don't have cats.) I saw a very young green-cheeked conure at the petstore and I instantly fell in love with it. When I put my hand against the glass; it rubbed its head against the glass. My parents are a little uncertain of getting a new bird and caring for it when I go to college; but do you think this little guy is worth it? I'm willing to spend all of my savings on him, he's a little darling.
I've been looking on the internet for some background information on these birds, but nothing I've read is really informative. Background information would be great, too! (Just don't overwork yourselves.)
Green cheeks are great little guys. They're one of the quietest conures, and are very cuddly and friendly. However they do go through a nippy stage at around 2 years old, but they're such fun personalities. If you're intersted in a smaller, less screechy conures also look into a black capped conure. They're very much like a green cheek. I'm partial to black capped conure, but both are great. However, green cheeks tend to be more one person species and black caps have been known to be a bit more social.
Either species will need about 2 hours minimum out of the cage, and about the same size cage. Go about this size (no smaller!!) http://www.mybirdcage.com/senegals_bird_cage.html And bigger if you can afford it. diet of pellets, seed, fruits, veggies, and pastas is necessary for a healthy parrot. A playstand for out of the cage play and exercise.
It might be hard to manage if you're going away to college. Dorms probably won't let you take in a small parrot, you'd have to live off campus. And then you have to find a place that allows pets. It's easier if you plan on going to community college or a university near your home where you can live at home. You're bird will need 2-3 hours every day, wether you have homework and a job or not. Birds are fairly expensive as well. If you feel you can afford it, and aren't worried about being able to give your bird time out of the cage I'd say go for it.
Please don't buy from a pet store. Unless it's an avian specialty store there is a chance that the bird isn't in good health or very tame. Try to find a good breeder, or adopt. Best of luck.
