Controversial Painters/Photographers?
I have to prepare a presentation in my Art class which covers 18th century - Modern Art. Any suggestions on topic or a controversial artist that might win me an A?
I don't believe the Modern movement began in the 18th century in the first place. However, controversial artists that seem worthy of mentioning from the 18th century include the Rococo style painters since they were criticized of painting beautiful subjects and portraits of kings and queens who weren't worthy for respect, like Marie-Antoinette, while neglecting the hurting painful reality that is experienced by the commoners. For that, you can look at Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun, Jean-Honore Fragonard, Jean-Antoine Watteau, and Francois Boucher.
However, if you really are looking for a Modern Art subject, I mean from Impressionism onwards (late 19th to mid 20th century), then you can look at artists such as Edouard Manet and his painting "A Bar at Folies-Berger". Also, you can regard Impressionism as a controversial movement since all Impressionists were criticized negatively and all had to paint in the Salon of the Rejected.
As for photographers... I suggest Baron Wilhelm von Gloeden. He was a 19th century German photographer who photographed male nudes in erotic poses. The same applies to Robert Mapplethorpe, who also photographed the same subject matter, only that he was a 20th century artist.
Hope that helps, and good luck on your assignment!

Romeo + Juliet [VHS] $3.20 Baz Luhrmann (Strictly Ballroom) takes a shot at reinventing Shakespeare's story of star-crossed lovers as a visual pastiche inspired by MTV imagery, Hong Kong action-picture clichés, and Luhrmann's own taste for deliberate, gaudy excess. The result is explosive chaos, both in terms of bullets and visual sensibility, which some may find impossible to stick with for more than a few minutes. Leon... |
