Decoupage an ukulele?
I just bough a used ukulele that has a bunch of lame stickers on it and looks a little worn. I want to remove the stickers and decoupage on some beachy pin up girls. BUT Will it hurt my Uke/affect it's playing? Because that is obviously the most important thing.
• I will be using "Mod Podge" to decoupage. (an all-in-one glue, sealer and finish)
• Decoupage is the art of gluing cut-out paper images onto any surface to form a pleasing decorative composition, and then coating the finished product with a varnish or other clear protective coating to preserve the piece. What can be decoupaged? Artists (or "decoupeurs") often decoupage unpainted wooden or papier-mache boxes and even glass plates, but just about anything that doesn't move can be decoupaged.
The brand of the uke is a "Gremlin" I'm not sure if this helps determine if it's poorly made or not?
Hello there,
The stickers on it don't help the sound any. Probably dampen the resonance. Adding more stuff by way of decoupage will definitely damped the resonance. I do not agree at all with the answer that putting something on the outside of the body will not effect the sound. This is an acoustic instrument. Changes to the body (how it is finished) will definitely effect the sound.
To remove the stickers, I use rubbing alcohol and cotton balls to cut the adhesive residue. But definitely check to see if the finish is harmed by the alcohol first. Pick a spot not very visible and treat a small spot by rubbing the alcohol on the body. Alcohol is a solvent, but usually does not harm the lacquer used on instrument. But be safe and test it first.
You can refinish the uke if you do not like the present finish. The key to this is matching the finish. If lacquer was used to finish it, use lacquer to refinish it. If enamel was used, then use enamel based paint and clear coats. You can mix, but need to be sure to remove all traces of the old finish. That is why it is easier and quicker to match the finish.
I do not have any experience with the Gremlin brand, so I cannot give you specifics on that.
